Government job age limit — exam by exam
There is no single "government job age limit." Each conducting body sets its own minimum, maximum and cut-off date — and its own relaxation ladder for OBC, SC/ST and ex-servicemen candidates.
The table below is read straight from the same verified records the Exam Finder checks you against — the base age band, the exact date it's reckoned on, and the relaxed upper limit for General/EWS, OBC and SC/ST where the notification states a flat number.

"—" means the exam's own record doesn't state a flat relaxation for that category, not that none exists — check the exam's page. Ex-servicemen relaxation is a service-deduction formula, not a flat addition; meribari's Finder never guesses the resulting age from data it doesn't collect.
questions
Frequently asked
Is there one age limit for all government jobs?
No. There is no single government job age limit — each conducting body (SSC, the Railway Recruitment Boards, IBPS, UP Police) sets its own minimum and maximum age, reckoned against its own cut-off date, not your birthday. meribari tracks the current limit for 11 exams; 10 state a confirmed number and cut-off date on record, and 1 vary by gender or category and are shown on the exam's own page instead of a single figure here.
What age relaxation do OBC candidates get?
It varies by exam — there is no fixed OBC age relaxation across government jobs. Per the records tracked here: SSC GD raises the upper limit from 23 to 26 for OBC; UP SI raises the upper limit from 28 to 36 for OBC; SSC CGL raises the upper limit from 32 to 35 for OBC; SSC CHSL raises the upper limit from 27 to 30 for OBC; SSC MTS raises the upper limit from 25 to 28 for OBC; RRB Group D raises the upper limit from 33 to 36 for OBC; RRB NTPC Graduate raises the upper limit from 33 to 36 for OBC; RRB NTPC UG raises the upper limit from 30 to 33 for OBC; IBPS PO raises the upper limit from 30 to 33 for OBC; IBPS Clerk raises the upper limit from 28 to 31 for OBC. Check the exam's own page for the exact figure before assuming a standard 3-year OBC relaxation applies.
What age relaxation do SC/ST candidates get?
Also exam-specific: SSC GD raises the upper limit from 23 to 28; UP SI raises the upper limit from 28 to 36; SSC CGL raises the upper limit from 32 to 37; SSC CHSL raises the upper limit from 27 to 32; SSC MTS raises the upper limit from 25 to 30; RRB Group D raises the upper limit from 33 to 38; RRB NTPC Graduate raises the upper limit from 33 to 38; RRB NTPC UG raises the upper limit from 30 to 35; IBPS PO raises the upper limit from 30 to 35; IBPS Clerk raises the upper limit from 28 to 33. As with OBC, don't assume one figure carries over between exams — each notification states its own SC/ST relaxation.
How does ex-servicemen age relaxation work?
It isn't the same mechanism on every exam. On SSC GD, UP SI, SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, SSC MTS, RRB Group D, RRB NTPC Graduate, RRB NTPC UG, IBPS Clerk, actual military service is deducted from the candidate's real age first, then the category's own limit is checked against that reduced age — meribari's Exam Finder shows the formula rather than computing a final yes/no, since the result depends on exact service length the Finder doesn't collect. On IBPS PO, it's a flat addition instead — see the table above for the exact number.
Why does the cut-off date matter more than my actual age?
Every exam reckons your age as on a specific date stated in its own notification — not the day you apply, and not your birthday. The same date of birth can be eligible for one exam's cut-off and just over the limit for another's, so the table above lists each exam's as-on date next to its age limit rather than a plain age range.
